What is Walking & Talking Therapy?

Walking & Talking Therapy is simply counselling that takes place while walking side-by-side rather than sitting face-to-face.

The pace is relaxed and tailored to you. We can pause, sit, or slow down whenever needed. The focus remains the same as in traditional counselling — providing a safe, confidential space where you can explore thoughts, emotions, and challenges.

Some people find that walking helps reduce the pressure of direct eye contact and allows conversations to feel more natural.

The Benefits of Walking & Talking Therapy

1. Encourages Open Conversation

Many people find it easier to speak while walking alongside someone rather than sitting opposite them. The relaxed environment can make difficult topics feel more approachable.

2. Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Spending time in natural surroundings has been shown to help calm the nervous system and reduce feelings of stress.

3. Improves Mood and Mental Wellbeing

Gentle movement and fresh air can boost mood, increase energy levels, and support emotional balance.

4. Promotes Clarity of Thought

Walking can help untangle busy thoughts and bring a sense of perspective to challenges you may be facing.

5. Connects Mind and Body

When the body moves, the mind often follows. Walking can help release tension and allow emotions to surface in a natural way.

Who is Walking & Talking Therapy Suitable For?

Walking & Talking Therapy may be helpful if you:

  • Feel uncomfortable sitting in a traditional counselling room
  • Enjoy being outdoors
  • Find it easier to talk while doing something active
  • Want a calmer and more natural setting for therapy
  • Feel stuck or overwhelmed and need space to think

It can be particularly helpful when working with issues such as stress, anxiety, low mood, life transitions, or feeling mentally “stuck”.

What to Expect

Sessions are usually around 50 minutes and take place on quiet walking routes. The pace is gentle and suitable for most levels of fitness.

Your comfort is important, so sessions can always pause for reflection, conversation, or simply a moment of quiet.

Confidentiality remains central to the work, just as it would in a traditional counselling session.
